Just buy a toyota, mazda or a honda they will go on driving forever. Toyota probably have the best service of all the car dealers in the faroes.

I can vouch for that. They have the best service I've ever experienced in FO.

Have the faroese declared war on the station car? I see they're cheap everywhere. I dont really want a station car though, and the corolla looks like the one the old man has..Toyota sounds good, I like toyota but that camry is ancient and has automatic transmission.

Why is the Opel Vectra the best so far? its older than and has more miles than the Astra.

Looks, schmooks! You sound like a girl. It's not like a 50k car is going to get a 33 year old man laid or anything. For gods sake just buy a car will you, it's not a fucking science project, and don't be so sensitive. smiley

Ok, I'm thinking having proper service is a very good thing when buying an old car that most likely will have problems at some point. Toyota also scores high on the list OKJones provided.

Lets say we're buying a Toyota. Since there are alot of the avensis model for sale, maybe we can get a good deal on one.
here's a review of the avensus :
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/usedcartests/31252/toyota_avensis.html
says the car is very reliable and to go for the 2.0 petrol model.

what's on sale in my range of 2.0 avensies:
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=7890
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=7846
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=7734
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=6282
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=6018

5 cars of roughly the same type. I'm thinking if I go and test them out, and compare them, I'll have the best chance to make a good purcase. Any favorites among these?

http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=6282 virkar heilt ok. Reimar skiftar og lakeradur í 07 so tad virkar sum ein sum hevur verid ok gódur vid bilin.

AirCon hoyrdi einaferd at tad var eitt stríd/dýrt tá tad skuldi serviserast, men um lorti riggar er tad nice to have.

Burdi verid minst 80.000 km í hasum bilinum enn.

I agree with you boddin, looks like he's been taking good care of it. If its the car torellion thinks it is, then that's even better - i know his parents have been taking good care of it smiley

One hitch though. By the comments it doesn't look like he's willing to part with it for 40k which is my hard limit.

He didnt accept a 40k offer in february...maybe he will now smiley

dámar mær væl. Hann stendur til 40k so kanska eg fái hann fyri 30-35k, er frá 1999, tvs tað nýggja modellið við tí nógv betra motorinum. Einasta problemið er, at seljarin virkar sum ein "playari". Hann hevur 3 onnur ting til salg.

Eg eri við Boddanum, hann hevur ein fínan motor, hevur ikki koyrt so nógv og er nýligani sproytaður. Og hann hevur staðið á sel.fo í 1/2 ár, so tú burdi kunna prutta eitt sindur.

Seem like great cars.
Most people I know who have Avensis are very satisfied.

Although I know some people have had to do without their (fairly new) car about 3-4 times a year because of technical problems/repairs. But I think that only applies to later models.

Sel.fo is a great page, but be advised that some people only put stuff there to check how much it's worth. Also sometimes the item is sold, but the seller doesn't bother removing the ad.

This was the car I started with. its the newer model, and has driven 9k less than the other one. I forgot it in my list of avensis'es. Definetly a car to consider yes? I guess if I'm going for an avensis, then the three candidates are:

http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=6282
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=6873
a tied 1st and 2nd choice.
http://www.sel.fo/Showcar.aspx?Id=7846
the cheap alternative.

I'll stick with the "Sproytaður í 2007. Allar reimar skiftar. Koyrir sum ein dreymur. Kann síggjast/roynast á Toftum. Ring 599506"

And its got a 2.0 insted of 1.8 engine. FO lots of climbs resulting in you've got to rep the engine more the smaller it is, more strain on the engine, more likely to say "puff.. klonk klonk tak tak tak" smiley

Yeah, on the face of it I agree with you Boddin. I dont think there is more that can be accomplished online. Now I have to test drive those two cars and see what kind if price they will agree to. Maybe they have already been sold like Laluu suggested, or maybe I'll uncover some flaw...

We'll see what happens smiley At least now I feel I can make a better purchase than when I started this thread and I would like to thank you all for contributing to the noble cause of reducing my vehicle ignorance. The rest is up to luck I suppose - a crapshoot.

Me and Thomsen were about yesterday looking and testing 2 cars from wencel. One opel astra 2.0 and one BMW. The opel astra was really nice in all respects expect the airbag light was on and after 10 minutes of driving, the "electrical fault" sign lit up aswell. I wonder if that means you can't get it through "syn" the next time?

The BMW I didn't really like so much.

The airbag might be a problem.

NOTE: They are from Nordcar, not Wenzel.

The Astra is still there! You might still have a chance of buying it.
