Larry Ellison (of Oracle) wanted to buy Apple in 1995 so his good friend Steve Jobs could return to power, and both of them could make a tidy profit.

Jobs rejected the idea saying, "I'm not a hostile takeover kind of a guy." Jobs would be invited back to the company a year later.

Ellison was happy for his friend, but pointed out that something was missing. He said to Jobs, "If we don't buy the company, then how can we make money?"

At this point Jobs got real close to Ellison and said, "Larry, this is why it's really important that I'm your friend. You don't need any more money."

Then came a moment that I think I will be able to look at forever and ever and ever. Florent Malouda played a pretty poor pass back to John Terry who turned and just fell over. Had it been winter I’m sure Terry would have blamed black ice, but whatever it was, Terry was on the ground, his face in the dirt where it belongs, and Robin van Persie was clean through on goal. He took it around Cech with ease and rolled it home with his right foot to make it 4-3.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

Lying here in the darkness
I hear the sirens wail
Somebody going to emergency
Somebody's going to jail
If you find somebody to love in this world
You better hang on tooth and nail
The wolf is always at the door

- Don Henley

Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'

The knowledge exists by which universal happiness can be secured; the chief obstacle to its utilization for that purpose is the teaching of religion. Religion prevents our children from having a rational education; religion prevents us from removing the fundamental causes of war; religion prevents us from teaching the ethic of scientific co-operation in place of the old fierce doctrines of sin and punishment. It is possible that mankind is on the threshold of a golden age; but if so, it will be necessary first to slay the dragon that guards the door, and this dragon is religion.
~ Bertrand Russell

One basis for hope is that, realistically, we are not beset by insoluble problems. While we do face big risks, the most serious ones are not ones beyond our control, like a possible collision with an asteroid of a size that hits the Earth every hundred million years or so. Instead, they are ones that we are generating ourselves. Because we are the cause of our environmental problems, we are the ones in control of them, and we can choose or not choose to stop causing them and start solving them. The future is up for grabs, lying in our own hands. We don't need new technologies to solve our problems; while new technologies can make some contribution, for the most part we "just" need the political will to apply solutions already available. Of course, that's a big "just." But many societies did find the necessary political will in the past. Our modern societies have already found the will to solve some of our problems, and to achieve partial solutions to others.
~ Jared Diamond

To this day, the boy that used to bully me at school still takes my lunch money. On the plus side, he makes great subway sandwiches.

Personally of course I regret everything. Not a word, not a deed, not a thought, not a need, not a grief, not a joy, not a girl, not a boy, not a doubt, not a trust, not a scorn, not a lust, not a hope, not a fear, not a smile, not a tear, not a name, not a face, no time, no place, that I do not regret, exceedingly. An ordure, from beginning to end.

Eg eri ímóti at broyta hjúnabandslógina. Men vit kristnu kunnu ikki verða dómarar yvir hvat onnur gera og tískil kunnu vit ikki verða lóglærarar. Vit skulu vísa næstrakærleika sum Jesus gjørdi heldur enn at verða upptikin av hvat onnur gera. Tað er nakað sum Jesus bað okkum gera. Eisini at elska tey samkyndu. Tað er eingin meining við at verða upptikin av hvat onnur gera um vit ikki síggja flísina í okkara egna eyga. Og eg sigi hettar tí at eg eri kristin.

(Alfred Hansen) Jú men um øll sum eru ímóti tiga, ja, so verður hon broytt. Tað er munur á at fordøma og at góðtaka, Eg haldi at hesi verða ofta blandaði saman. Vit sum eru foreldur siga viðhvørt nei til børn okkara tí vit elska tey og tí vit vita hvat fygjurnar verða um vit lata tey gera eitthvørt sum kann fáa keðiligar avleiðingar fyri tey um vit ikki søgdu nei.,

(Bergur): Passar. Men tað kann ikki ordiliga samanberast við at verða upptikin av hvat onnur gera og at tey skulu liva rætt eftir okkara tykki. Vit sum kristin kunnu ikki fordøma onnur fyri hvat tey gera. Fyrst eiga vit at hyggja at okkum sjálvum og síðani hugsa um at Jesus elskar eisini tey. Sjálvt um vit ikki dáma alt sum tey gera so er okkara uppgáva at liva Kristus og ikki royna at gera okkum sjálv til dómarar yvir øðrum. Bara Gud er dómari.
Vit kunnu ikki krevja at ikki-kristin SKULU liva eftir bíbliuni. Tá gera vit hana til lógartrældóm. Tað er ikki náði og kærleiki, og heldur ikki frælsi.
Tá vit gera bíbliuna og kristindómin til tað so skilji eg væl hví so nógv eru ímóti kristindóminum.

"No man is an Island, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee."
