If this really works, wouldn't the fruit fly be extinct?
But it would be nice to get something that works as well, or better, than DEET without being toxic.

Seems like there is too little information in this article about the details on fruitflies. But I imagine that no repellent system is flawless, not even that of ripe fruits?
I agree, that DEET works very well, but at the same time I worry about exposing myself to such chemicals too often and continually. Therefore I look forward to a ecologically sustainible compound. I read something about kiwi juice (the fruit) the chemical Picaridin, working well against different flying critters.
