JMS did a damn good job on keeping this secret until O'Hare died. I remember us wondering, discussing, and searching the web for why Cmd Sinclair was written out.

I remember it came as a shock, in similar fashion to I reacted to Game of Thrones "removing" major characters. However, I always thought that it was originally written that way and just was part of great storytelling.

Some sources back then talked about contract differences (the normal reason for cast change), others about the network wanting a bigger star for the show. None apart from Jerry Doyle in his later years said O'Hara is nuts and schizo - and since Jerry Doyle did this now that he is a talk-radio host to the right of Glenn Beck most people ignored him.
