New Hurricane hitting New Orleans
News by Norlander3 years ago this week, New Orleans was hit by hurricane Katrina, which caused catastrophic damage.

Tonight the city braces itself for a hurricane of equal or greater strength as hurricane Gustavis making it's way for the Louisiana coastline. Unlike Katrina which hit to the east of New Orleans, Gustav is on track to hit on the western side, which is worse as the storm surges are more intense directly east of the hurricanes eye.

One can only hope that the US Government learned it's lesson 3 years ago so we'll not witness the city drowned yet again.

For more on this story read the science blog at DailyKos.

Hurricane Katrina as it looked on August 28th 2005. It's a big fucking storm.

Since many of you like to compared to what happens in the Faroes.

Hurricane Gustav had sustained winds - not gusts - of 67 m/sec. Or to put it another way. The highest gust measured in the Faroes by meteorological stations is 66,7 m/sec and the highest sustained winds are 50 m/sec.

Landsverk has measured higher winds in the mountains (Norðadalsskar, Stóratjørn etc.) but even then it's never been above 77 m/sec in gusts, with sustained winds never reaching past 50 m/sec. Hurricane Gustav on the other hand is doing sustained winds of 67 m/sec and gusts over 100 m/sec.

Well Landsverk's wind measuring equipment can't measure higher than about 50 m/sec, so I guess we don't really know the highest winds here.
Norlander on September 01 2008 07:45:04
Of course it can, there have been several measurements of gusts at 60 m/sec in 2008 alone.
OKJones on September 01 2008 08:18:26
I don't know if you remember the landsyning storm back in february, they all stopped at the exact same wind speed, 56,4 m/s or whatever it was, so no they can't.
Norlander on September 01 2008 10:15:37
Funny, if you go to lv.fo, plug in the date and look at for instance Stóratjørn or Norðadalsskar then you'll see gusts reaching 60 m/sec at various points during this winder.

And no this isn't some new thing, I've shown this stat to plenty of people on this site back in february... see this forum thread and the embedded images theresmiley

If it was 50 or 60 I don't remember but the highest wind speed measured was the same around the country, except for where that "ætt" wasn't so bad. And there was a guy from lv on the radio saying the wind measurement had a limit of I can't remember (pretty sure it was about 50-60).

In 1989 the one on Norðadalskarð measured 72,1 m/s and broke.

works with no issues in normal version of Firefox. I'm guessing you either did not do CTRL+F5 or are using some adblock plugin.

Use Firefox and it blocks all sorts of unwanted stuff of course.
